For her project TEXT/TEXTILE, artist Vita Buivid organizes a series of workshops and gatherings during which she invites volunteers to collectively work on a large crocheted artwork and discuss topics such as ageism, resilience and longevity. Together, participants work through the social fabric of our time and knit together the spaces that seem to separate us from each other. The end result, large crocheted panels with inserted texts, will be presented at the year’s end in the chapel of HMK.

Vita Buivid was born in Dnepropetrovsk (USSR, now Ukraine) and is currently living and working in Amsterdam. After graduation from the Dnepropetrovsk State University, she moved to Leningrad (now St. Petersburg, Russia) where she initially worked with photography and photo-based art and gradually started to integrate textiles, collage techniques and oil paints into her work. As a research-based artist, she reflects on the social and the political aspects of ageing, that are inherently intertwined with her personal experiences as an artist. She participated in numerous international exhibitions, most noteworthy with her series How I Spent My Summer, which got nominated for a Kandinsky Price in 2009, her solo retrospective which took place in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in 2016, and her project Nevsky Prospect in the parallel program of the 2017 Venice Biennale.  In 2020, she graduated from the Dutch Art Institute and in 2022, she will be one of HMK’s long term artists in residence, with her project TEXT/TEXTILE.
