Caleb Witvoet: Up Worlds Down Words

Caleb Witvoet: Up Worlds Down Words

May 23 – June 14, 2025
Visitable from Thursday to Saturday, 1 – 5 pm

In Up Worlds Down Words, Caleb transforms the Maria Chapel into a space of motion, rebellion, and community. At the heart of the exhibition stands a hand-built wooden skate ramp, echoing the arches of the chapel’s ceiling. He brings together two seemingly distant worlds: skate culture and ‘sacred’ space.

Skating and graffiti could be said to be forms of civil disobedience—ways to reclaim space and rewrite the rules of the city. Rooted in craftsmanship, Caleb’s work revolves around the temporary, the processual, and the tactile rather than the finished object. The ramp at HMK becomes both sculpture and site: a place where motions, sounds, materials, and surroundings move together in flow.

Alongside his installation, the exhibition features woven works by artist Sophia Lengle and a sound intervention by Siem de Boer.

Visitors are warmly invited to visit the exhibition and interact with the work.

Whispers of resistance

Up Worlds Down Words is part of HMK’s 2025 programme Whispers of resistance, a year of softness, which explores softness as a form of resistance in times of social and political tension.
