This summer is Hotel Maria Kapel's birthday and we are going to celebrate! We will immerse ourselves in the chapel's past and take a look back at the many art projects that have taken place here. What can we learn from the past, what moved us at the time and what insights do we take with us? For this exhibition, we will dive into the archive and bring the rich history of the chapel to the surface.

This year, Hotel Maria Kapel celebrates how the Maria Chapel in the centre of Hoorn continues to thrive as a place where people meet and artists are given the opportunity to experiment, develop new work and show it to the public. In 1983, artists' initiative De Achterstraat, initiated by Joep Neefjes, moved into the chapel, and art has not disappeared from the centuries-old building since. After several years of the chapel being used by the Sandberg Institute as a second location, in 2003 Hotel Maria Kapel was finally established by Danielle van Zuijlen and Bart Lodewijks; Hoorn's art space with the statue of De Liggende Man on the roof.

Jawek Kwakman, Bubbling Under
Artist Jawek Kwakman, together with initiator Joep Neefjes co-founder of De Achterstraat in 1983, shows an immersive installation in which collected archival material of the Maria Chapel is animated using the latest technologies and A.I., and projected on the walls of the darkened chapel. Just as time leaves its traces in space, this work physically allow us to walk into the history of the chapel. How do cultural institutions handle their archives, both physical and digital? And how do we make our way through the material? Jawek's intuitive approach invites us to experience the archive while it dances across the walls of the chapel.

Piet Jan Blauw, A trip into the parallel universe
Hoorn-based musician and artist Piet Jan Blauw fills the chapel with a soundscape that complements and further brings Jawek's work to life. This sound work has been specially developed for the chapel and will be performed at the opening on 14 July (19:00) and during exhibition opening hours.

Rik Dijkhuizen, Inside Archive
The permanent installation Inside Archive by artist Rik Dijkhuizen stems from a project in which the physical archive material was organised and made accessible in a yellow structure placed like a monument on HMK's mezzanine. In addition, the work reflects on the idea of the archive as a living body and the human body as an archive. Both need constant care and attention, and Inside Archive, in which the archival material is carefully stored and a comfortable seat provides an opportunity to take a break, provides both. During the exhibition, the installation will be reconfigured and a presentation will be on display on the mezzanine.

14 July will be a day where everyone is invited to celebrate that the chapel has been a place where art lives for such a long time, and we would like to invite everyone to contribute to the expansion of the Inside Archive or the creation of the immersive video installation Bubbling Under.

Are you in possession of interesting archival material about the Maria Chapel? Old photos, newspapers, publications, artefacts, we will be very happy to take it for safekeeping! Contribute to a living work of art that continues to grow. Send us a message at pers@hotelmariakapel.nl or come to the chapel to talk to us and/or leave it with us. Thank you!

Jawek Kwakman has devoted his whole life to art. He specialised early on in designing using algorithms, making him a pioneer in the world of digital art. He calls his work pseudo-reality; art that looks like a representation of reality, but is not. Because, "technically, the algorithm does not see images at all," according to Jawek. Especially for the anniversary of Hotel Maria Kapel, Jawek has developed a large-scale new work entitled Bubbling Under, for which he delved deep into the history of the Maria Chapel.

Piet Jan Blauw is a visual and sound artist and inventor of instruments and installations. He creates sculptures of sounds and melodies with amplifiers, samplers and processors. Technology gives him the opportunity to create new sounds and explore the boundaries in them. Piet Jan often plays a mix of prehispanic-electro, down tempo & trance and since 2000 has often collaborated with renowned DJs and producers such as Jorge Reyes and DJ Isis at major music festivals.

Rik Dijkhuizen is a visual artist whose multidisciplinary work reflects on mental health in a hyper-individualistic society. In his installations and imaginative narratives, he uses numerous references to think critically about wellbeing and collective embodiment. The places created in his work are not quite of this world but feel strangely familiar and are somewhere between reality and fiction; they are compelling topos that are inviting and incite reflection. Rik studied at Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam, and is a former resident at Hotel Maria Kapel, where he built a pool oasis in the chapel in 2020 titled Inside Poolside.
