Nederland, word beter! De impact van 15 jaar zwart activisme

Nederland, word beter! The impact of 15 years of Black activism

The travelling exhibition Nederland, word beter! explores the impact of 15 years of Black activism in West Friesland; it will be on display on 6, 7 and 8 November in Villa Maria at HMK.

The exhibition looks back on fifteen years of the fight against racism and other forms of exclusion. We take you through the successes, efforts, and lessons of the Nederland Wordt Beter (NLWB) and Kick Out Zwarte Piet (KOZP) movements. In Hoorn, the local and regional context of Hoorn and West Friesland is explicitly central. The struggle in Hoorn, led by the We Promise foundation, has also contributed to progress in other parts of North Holland, such as Alkmaar, Volendam, Enkhuizen, Purmerend, and Heerhugowaard.

On Saturday evening, November 7, there will be an inspiring program featuring a special screening of the documentary Onze Strijd: Het Einde van Nederland Wordt Beter (Our Struggle: The End of the Netherlands Getting Better). This new documentary follows the final days of the movement Nederland Wordt Beter & Kick out Zwarte Piet, the most impactful social movement in the Netherlands of the last few decades. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with Marisella de Cuba, Merve Kaçmiş, and Jerry Afriyie, among others and moderator Julian Wijnstein. We will conclude the evening with drinks and music.

From Friday, November 6 to Sunday, November 8, 2026, the traveling exhibition will be on display at Villa Maria at Hotel Maria Kapel in Hoorn. The exhibition looks back on fifteen years of the fight against racism and other forms of exclusion.
