Cinema Perdu invites you to a special evening focused on the work of Yasujirô Ozu, exploring themes of the relationship between adult parents and their grown children.
A typical Cinema Perdu experience: rare, timeless, and unavailable elsewhere. For this occasion, we even travelled to Groningen to obtain a unique Dutch-subtitled version.
Following earlier evenings in 2022 and 2023 where we highlighted Ozu’s work, we now turn our attention to his final contribution. Though presented in colour, the visuals remain understated, mostly greys, with the occasional striking red, orange, or yellow detail that quietly draws the eye. Thematically, it resonates with earlier presentations and touches on timely reflections about granting younger generations the space to find happiness (and perhaps on less timely notions of self-effacement).
A quote that captures the tone:
“A widower with three adult children comes to realise that his daughter, who cares for him, must be given the chance to follow her own path. With quiet sensitivity, a world is sketched where loneliness, joy, and doubt live side by side.”
