Rebecca Birch en Charles Danby werken beiden met de relatie tussen taal en beeld. Birch onderzoekt in interviews wat voor taal mensen gebruiken voor het beschrijven van het landschap om hen heen. Zo filmde ze bijvoorbeeld de handgebaren van mensen die hun landschap beschrijven en voegde met animatie lijnen toe die die vormen volgen. Danby onderzoekt de relatie tussen objecten en taal, door middel van sculpturen en tekeningen die zich ogenschijnlijk aan het narratieve onttrekken, maar zich er toch toe verhouden.
Tijdens hun verblijf in Hoorn werken Birch en Danby vanuit de open content-filosofie die momenteel populair is op internet, waarin de kunstenaars en andere creatievelingen elkaar vrij baan geven hun materiaal te hergebruiken. In HotelMariaKapel presenteren de kunstenaars composities van geluidsfragmenten, projecties, tekeningen en sculpturen. Ook tijdens de expositie zullen ze de ruimte blijven veranderen door nieuwe werken toe te voegen; zo ontstaat een steeds gelaagdere stapeling van inhoud en betekenis.

Over de kunstenaars

Rebecca Birch (1978) woont en werkt in Londen en volgde daar de academies Goldsmiths en Slade. Recent onderzoek en tentoonstellingen zijn bijvoorbeeld Great Northern, een reis naar de poolcirkel die Birch maakte in 2008, On Time in het Courtauld Institute, Londen, in hetzelfde jaar en eerder 36 Day Mountain, een solotentoonstelling in Galeria Aneks, Poznan (2007) en een residency bij Banff Centre, Canada (2007).

Charles Danby (1976) woont en werkt eveneens in Londen en volgde ook een opleiding aan Slade School of Fine Art. Naast kunstenaar is hij schrijver en docent aan Loughborough University, UK. Recente tentoonstellingen zijn If You Build It They Will Come (2008) in G39, Cardiff, Pyramids (2008) in Galeria Del Cortile, Rome en Despite My Intentions (2006) in Loft, Dublin. Danby is bovendien mede-oprichter van PROJECKT, dat tentoonstellingen en publicaties voortbrengt.

Rebecca Birch and Charles Danby

Rebecca Birch and Charles Danby are both interested in the relationship between language and image. Birch investigates through video the language people use to describe their local landscape. For example, using animation over video to trace the hand gestures made while talking. Danby investigates the relationship between objects and language, by making sculptures and drawings that seem to distance themselves from narration and yet relate to it.  During their stay in Hoorn Birch and Danby will work from a basis of free exchange, each allowing the other access to their material, similar to the philosophy of open-source popular across the Internet. At HotelMariaKapel the artists will present compositions of audio fragments, projections, drawings and sculptures.  They will continue to transform the space throughout the exhibition by adding new works resulting in a layering of content and meaning.

About the artists

Rebecca Birch (1978) is based in London and went to Goldsmiths and the Slade. Recent research and exhibitions include Great Northern, a journey to the Arctic Circle Birch made in 2008, On Time at the Courtauld Institute, London, in the same year and earlier 36 Day Mountain, a solo show at Galeria Aneks, Poznan (2007) and a residency at the Banff Centre, Canada (2007).

Charles Danby (1976) is also based in Londen equally went to Slade School of Fine Art. Apart from being an artist he is a writer and lectures at Loughborough University, UK. Recent exhibitions include If You Build It They Will Come (2008) in G39, Cardiff, Pyramids (2008) in Galeria Del Cortile, Rome and Despite My Intentions (2006) in Loft, Dublin. Also, Danby is a co-founder of PROJECKT, an international curatorial and publishing body.
