Pressrelease: HMK presenteert met trots: TERRARIUM

TERRARIUM is een tentoonstelling en een reeks events geïnitieerd door kunstenaarscollectief Reclamation. Reclamation combineert werkwijzen uit kunst, religie, en exploratie in ruimtes als de studio, de galerie of gebedshuizen – dit alles ter onbezoldigde verering van de natuurlijke wereld.
Tijdens TERRARIUM transformeren de Reclamation-kunstenaars HMK in een DIY kerk der natuur. Middels hergebruik van afgedankte materialen en ingenieuze bouwsels zoals plafond-aquaducten versmelten woestijn, oerwoud en jungle in onze Mariakapel. TERRARIUM schept zo een ruimte om ideeën te delen, de chaos te vieren, en ons te bezinnen over onze relatie met onze omgeving en elkaar.
TERRARIUM omvat naast een installatie ook een extensief programma aan workshops, muzikale performances, lezingen en presentaties. Daarbij worden naast speciale gasten ook de bezoekers uitgenodigd om bijdragen te leveren en de discussie voort te zetten. Onderdeel van deze events is Constellate, waar bezoekers worden uitgenodigd om, gekleed in witte pakken, bestaande of zelfbedachte sterrenbeelden uit te beelden met hun lichaam. Ritual/Music is een serie muzikale avonden waarin avontuurlijke kunstenaars/performers en curatoren site-specifieke werken uitvoeren die een reactie vormen op het concept “rituele muziek”. Er zijn Tea Party Socials, waarbij het publiek wordt uitgenodigd om grijswaterthee te drinken tijdens het realiseren van collaboratieve projecten. In het slotweekend vindt Fair plaats, waar middels een inversie van het beurs-formaat praktische en volledige onbruikbare oplossingen aangaande het zo “fair” mogelijk hergebruiken van de tijdens TERRARIUM gebruikte materialen worden gepresenteerd. Deze oplossingen zijn aangedragen door onder andere schoolklassen, kunstenaars en afvalprofessionals tijdens hun bezoek aan TERRARIUM.
TERRARIUM is het derde deel in de grotere Reclamation-serie, in januari 2009 door Denny en Kim opgezet. De interactieve installaties van Reclamation scheppen alternatieve methodes om te kijken naar, denken over en omgaan met de omgeving. Reclamation streeft ernaar om ruimtes te scheppen waarin haar publiek kan reflecteren op onderwerpen als environmentalisme en religie. Wanneer deze onderwerpen gescheiden worden benaderd middels de huidige methodes van interactie zijn ze zo beladen, dat zinnige of constructieve discussie doorgaans bij voorbaat uitgesloten is. Eerdere projecten in de Reclamation-serie waren PLANETARIUM ( Bij Environmentaland, Los Angeles, CA) en AQUARIUM (bij Sea and Space Explorations, Los Angeles, CA).
Tijdens TERRARIUM stuurt HMK wekelijks per email een update met meer informatie over de events van de komende week rond. Opgave voor deelname aan of aanwezigheid bij events is niet verplicht maar wel mogelijk, en kan door een email te sturen naar jantine@hotelmariakapel.nl . Een beknopt overzicht van alle geplande events vindt u in het attachment en op onze website.
Terrarium wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door de Mondriaan Stichting, Stichting DOEN en de gemeente Hoorn.
Opening: vrijdag 3 september vanaf 19:00. De opening valt samen met de opening van het culturele seizoen van Hoorn, welke ook bij HMK plaats zal vinden.

TERRARIUM is an installation and event series created by the Reclamation collective, which recombines practices of art, worship, and exploration in spaces designed to allude to the studio, the gallery, and the house of god—all in reverence of the natural world.
During TERRARIUM the artists involved in Reclamation transform HMK into a DIY “church to nature”. By re-using discarded materials and building ingenious constructions like ceiling-aquaducts, they facalitate a merging of desert, forest and jungle in and with the HMK chapel. In this way TERRARIUM provides a space to share ideas, celebrate chaos, and meditate on our relationship with the environment and thereby, each other.
TERRARIUM’s calendar is packed with workshops, musical performances, lectures, and presentations in which visitors, groups, and invited guests are invited to make something and further the discussion. Events include Constellate, for which visitors are invited to don white jumpsuits, choose a constellation (or invent their own), and recreate it with our bodies. Ritual/Music is a series of evenings in which adventurous artists/performers/curators perform site-specific work that react to the concept of ritual music. There are Tea Party Socials, in which the public is invited to partake in gray-water tea whilst conducting participatory arts projects. In the final weekend Fair will present solutions designed by school children, artists, and waste managers, among others, on how to discard of the materials used for the installation in a way that is "fair."
TERRARIUM is the third in the Reclamation series, which was co-founded by Denny and Kim in January 2009. Reclamation’s interactive installations create alternate ways to look at, consider, and engage with the environment. Reclamation strives to create spaces in which the public can consider the issues of environmentalism and religion that, when approached separately and through current modes of interaction, are so highly-charged that meaningful or constructive discussion is often precluded. Previous Reclamation shows include PLANETARIUM at Environmentaland (Los Angeles, CA) and AQUARIUM at Sea and Space Explorations (Los Angeles, CA).
For the duration of TERRARIUM, HMK will send out a weekly update featuring more detailed information concerning the coming events. Signing up for events is not required but it is possible, and can be done by sending an email to jantine@hotelmariakapel.nl . An overview and short summary of the coming events can be found in the attachment and on our website.

Previews: Friday 3 September 7 pm. The previews are part of the opening of the cultural season of Hoorn, which will take place at HMK at the same time.
