“It's more and more common, actually, to find works in exhibitions that somehow hit the spectator as if they were shouting, instead of talking, and I don't see the need of it.”

In Quiet is the New Loud, guestcurator Teresa Iannotta aims to create a powerful exhibition in a most subtle way. By rejecting all overwhelming and distracting elements from the works in the exhibition, Ianotta wants to show us a contemporary art that returns to the origins of ideas. For Quiet is the New Loud, Iannotta selected 4 international artists. Thoufgh all artists work with different media, they apply a very similar approach in their workprocess, which focuses mainly on creating meaning in as subtle a way as possible.

With the title of the show, Iannotta also refers to a similar development towards minimalism in popmusic. The title of the show was adopted from the title of a conceptalbum by the band Kings of Convenience. The aim of the album was to make a grand statement in an extremely calm and acoustic way. In regard to this existing link with acoustic popmusic, a number of musicians were invited by Ianotta to play a minimal acoustic session within the context of the show, and the extraordinary acoustics of the Maria Chapel. The invited musicians are I am Oak and artists/musicians Kathrin Wolkovicz and Gerwin Luijendijk.

The opening of Quiet is the New Loud will take place on sunday June 13th, at 4 PM.

The acoustic sessions will be held on
June 27th at the Maria Chapel, from 7 PM.

Stefano Calligaro lives and works in Rotterdam. In his work, he investigates the nature of an artwork in a most minimalist way. He recycles image, material and meaning, to construct a new frame of reference, that not only relates to the work itself, but also the the world outside of it.

Andrew Sroka often works with stillives, that he frames through video or photography. By adding certain marks to his images, they become quiet yet unique timeprints. Andrew Sroka lives and works in New York.

David Stamp graduated from the Piet Zwart institute in Rotterdam in 2009. His work, that mainly consists of sculptures and installations, Stamp touches on the imagery of cultural rituals, and the useful or useless nature of these folklore acts.

Sjoerd Westbroek lives and works in Rotterdam, where he recently graduated from the Piet Zwart institute. His work mostly consists of drawings, which he then presents in installations. This context-specific presentation of his work is regarded by Westbroek as an essential element in creating meaning.
