RE_constructing

Metamorphoses in and around Hotel MariaKapel; new perspectives and attitudes

RE_constructing concerns itself with metamorphosis. A new prospect and transformation at the same time. According to Merriam Webster 'metamorphosis' is: 'a change of physical form, structure, or substance: a striking alteration in appearance, character, or circumstances'. RE_constructing is the first show in Hotel MariaKapel by new programme curators Jantine Wijnja and Daniël Dennis De Wit, where they show what in contemporary art makes their hearts beat faster.

In this show artists have been selected whose work as well as attitudes are important and special: Joshua Greene, who each month dedicates one night?s worth of his earnings as a waiter to an art fund (the amount of each month?s grant is determined by his earnings of that specific night). Jelle Bakker, who in the construction of his gigantic marble-tracks pushes dedication and focus to amazing heights. Constant Dullaart bravely descends into the strange world of amateur film in order to assemble his own films. Jonathan Harchick, who no longer needs the art world, propells his uneasy productions into the world via the internet instead.

RE_constructing is the second part of a diptych concerning analysis and metamorphosis. The first part, DE_constructing, took place in Hotel MariaKapel in November and December 2007.

About the artists:

Jelle Bakker (NL, 1983) creates gigantic and ingenious marble tracks. In constructing them he pays close attention to light- and sound effects. Materials vary from hoses of vacuumcleaners and lego trainrails to xylophones, saws and mirrorballs. Bakker's unusually keen mathematical and spatial perception are related to his autism. Hotel MariaKapel invited him because of his incredible drive to always make his installations as large, challenging and special as he possibly can: dedication and perseverance at their best. For RE_constructing, he is building his highest marble track so far.

Constant Dullaart (NL, 1979) is currently a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where he is working on an action movie built up from fragments of donated, found or bought amateur video material. Also in Hotel MariaKapel he is placing himself amongst groups of friends he just met by posing in their group pictures, and puts new furniture in a picture made Christmas 1992 of a living room. All this is done through the chroma-key / blue-screen technique.
In Hotel MariaKapel, sketches for the action movie will be shown along with some of the most remarkable finds. During the opening of RE_constructing, bluescreen experiments will be performed with the visitors of the exhibition.

Joshua Greene (USA, 1971) borrowed Sophie Calles bed for six months to mourn a broken relationship, ran a restaurant from his studio and worked as an officially unlicensed therapist. ForRE_constructing, he is passing his artists' fee and residency-opportunity on to Edwin Figueroa - a poorly chanced boy he doesn't know, found through neighbourhood organizations in his hometown of San Franscisco and who until now didn't own a passport. In this way, Greene turns the residency-opportunity we offered him into a chance to go to Europe for someone on whose radar that option wouldn't normally appear.
During his stay in Hoorn, Edwin Figuaroa will record his thoughts concerning his trip in texts and photographs, which will be presented in Hotel MariaKapel.

Jonathan Harchick (USA, 1989) is one of the most-watched producers on YouTube in the 'guru' category, where his work elicits some varying but strong reactions. His online tv-show Talking With Jonis based on the well-known format of the variety show, yet turned inside-out. Talking With Jonprovides an uneasy combination of sharp satire, deadpan loneliness and many hours of industrious home crafts.
In RE_constructing several episodes of Talking With Jon will be shown along with other videoworks by Harchick.
