A Beer Brewery in Hotel Mariakapel

Something's Brewing is a collaborative project by Edith Abeyta, visual artist from Los Angeles, US and Judith Thissen, assistant professor in Media History, Utrecht University. By launching an art beer on the Dutch market under the name BIER, the project seeks to understand the processes of commercialization in the cultural field. 

The project is part of CO-OPs - Exploring new territories in art and science, a programme initiated by NWO (the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research). 

The brewery will be located at Hotel Mariakapel in Hoorn, with Robert Tower in residence as the brewer. Edith Abeyta produces a hand-made merchandise-campaign, for which she will be using the diverse designs that were submitted by artists, scientists and others as a reaction to an open call to design a beer label. 

During the the project, the BIER will be served at several other cultural events, thus becoming a small scale sponsor of each event (production: Hotel Mariakapel).
