Everything changes
Residency and project space Hotel Mariakapel is being reconstructed? And two new curators have joined the team: Daniël Dennis de Wit en Jantine Wijnja. Together they have concieved the project 'DE_constructing' and it's consecutive sequel, 'RE_constructing' (January/February 2008). The project forms a twofold concerning analysis and metamorphosis.
The first of the twofold, 'DE_constructing' is a show about attempting to maintain control while facing the uncontrollable. It is about analysis, taxonomy and fixation that approaches a state of neurosis. Artists for whom inventory and/or analysis is a pivotal part of their work have been invited to apply their methods to Hotel MariaKapel and its surroundings.
About the participating artists:
Arturas Bum?teinas (Vilnius,1982 has an MA in composition, and since 2002 has also been active as visual artist often in collaboration with Laura Garb?tiene, with whom he forms G-Lab. Works include audiovisual installations, performances and videos. He was one of the conductors of the Antiradical Opera.
Wim van Egmond (Den Haag, 1966) specializes in stereoscopic and microscopic photography, and developed the system of Microbial Art Climotology: ?[...] The practice of microbial art climatology starts with immersing (a sample of) the art works (submergence) in an environment with a lot of micro-organisms (ditchwater). Micro-organisms will settle in and on the art works in great numbers and by doing so provide the key to the microbial art climatological analysis. In the end, the quality of the art work is determined by the type of organism that it attracts [...]?.
The work of Saskia Koops (Meppel, 1969) is characterized by the exploration and 'scanning' of mainly architectonic spaces. Using photography as her primarily vehicle she discovers the hidden markings and scars that a space has accumulated over the years, combing for and classifying the remaining traces of it's history. "Not trusting my own senses, I am trying to sense the spaces again, scanning them in different ways and with various means. Any detail, no matter how apparently insignificant, can be of great importance."
Johanna Lecklin (Helsinki, 1972) works with photography, video and interactive media. Utilizing voice-over, multiple projection and installation she experiments in the telling of a story by way of fragmentation. Leckling also produces video portraits which equilibrate between documentary and fiction. In 2004 she created the ongoing project Story Café: Visitors are given a cup of coffee and are asked to recite their story on film. Stories told in one location are shown in the next Story Café. A portion of the stories have been transformed into dramatized scripts. For DE_constructing Johanna Lecklin revisits the history of the Hotel Mariakapel as a former orphanage.
