CATALYST RESIDENCY

Mounira Al Solh
Thomas Desmet
Ronald Detige
Reiko Kanazawa

Following the CATALYST project that has taken place at de Brakke Grond in Amsterdam in the summer, these recently graduated artists are in residence at HMK for two weeks.

The artists chose a location in the Hotel (a former orphanage) to react to. The public is invited to enter this labyrinthic building, in search for the locations of the artists' choice. There are sound- and video installations, wall pieces, conversations; one of the artists shows a Japanese animation film which inspired her work, there are drinks and food. It promises to be an informal afternoon with a special reception, hosted by the artists - you are mostly welcome!

The Mariakapel is also open to the public (with 'The Integration Suite', more info on the right side of this page.)

Background information:
Catalyst is a series of conversations, an exhibition and a catalogue, as well as a residency, curated by Tessa Giblin (NZ) and Angela Serino (IT) in collaboration with de Brakke Grond, Flemish Cultural Centre in Amsterdam. The Catalyst exhibition took place this summer at de Brakke Grond. Eight graduating artists from Sint-Lucas Beeldende Kunst (BEL) and Gerrit Rietveld Academie (NL) were connected to experts from other fields of knowledge. A publication launch on August 26 marked the end of the exhibition, but Catalyst continues with a residency at Hotel Mariakapel in Hoorn.

Angela Serino, one of the curators, proposed to Hotel Mariakapel to select four artists from the Catalyst project for a 2 week residency period. Not with the aim of creating a new exhibition, but to give the artists a concentrated opportunity to develop their work further. The four artists-in-residence have been selected by Tessa Giblin, Angela Serino (Catalyst curators), Fleurie Kloostra (De Brakke Grond) and Danielle van Zuijlen (Hotel Mariakapel).

The residency will result in a One Day Public Event at HMK hosted by the artists on Sunday October 15 starting at 2 pm. More information will be available on the website, www.hotelmariakapel.nl.

The residency is generously supported by HMK and de Brakke Grond.
