Montescaglioso, Southern Italy, summer 2004. A young man in camel coloured suit is hanging around in the steep streets of a small village in southern Italy. A modest sized public is following him; he is following them. Suddenly he starts running towards a low wall at a viewing point, where a few village people are enjoying the valley view. They are not prepared for the young man's jump over the wall, into the deep, and he leaves them behind in a puzzled state. This 'leap in the void' by Olivier Maarschalk was part of a project with young artists from 8 European countries, in which Hotel Mariakapel participated with a group of Dutch artists.
Two years later, Olivier made quite a different work in one of the spaces of HMK's guest quarters. An installation of light projections and simple household steps. Two walls make a freestanding corner in the space. Through a circuit of slide projectors, a video camera and a video projector, the steps are visible on both sides of the corner: as an object, as a shadow that is falling apart in several colours and as a video projection of this game of light. A confusing experience, causing curiosity to what is happening here. The secret lies in the two slide projectors. They project pairs of complementary light colours, whose pairing causes white light: red and green, yellow and blue? When one of the colours is blocked (because there is an object, in this case the household steps, in between), the shadow lights up in the remaining colour. More important than this physical explanation is the effective game Olivier is playing with reality and with expectations.
The work became a part of 'The Integration Suite', a project in which Olivier collaborates at HMK with Pieter Kock, Ali Altin, Özlem Altin, Jan Huijben and Janko van der Werf. Starting point for 'The Integration Suite' is a composition by Olivier and Pieter, made with music from a range of traditions. The composition is constructed by simultaneously playing two different musical pieces, together forming a whimsical, but still harmonious new piece. The group of artists works together to create a space-filling installation, in which music and visual elements are equal to one another. Aiming to create an energetic atmosphere and striving for a convergence of individual qualities, this project is a new leap in the 'void'; a challenge that Olivier (and the colleagues he proposed) took on by invitation of Hotel Mariakapel.
