THE LAST DAYS OF DADA
Requested by HOTEL MARIAKAPEL, Wiesje Peels made a photographic portrait of the last days of DADA, the night pub in the Maria Chapel, which has recently closed its doors. Together with graphic designer Steffen Maas, a presentation was realised which will conserve DADA for eternity.
Peels made large portraits of the frequent guests (from 30 to 87 years old, amongst whom transvestites, but also the former Mayor of Hoorn). Steffen Maas provided the portraits with a logo, "Les derniers Jours de DaDa", as if it were a perfume brand (clearly playing on Chanel advertising) and designed DADA No 1, a beer smell in a box, also containing a magazine with a selection of the photographs. Visitors can sign a farewell message for DaDa and receive a box of DaDa No1 for the price of a drink.

Simultaneously in the Hotel: a space filling text work by the Glasgow-based artist Ian Balch, entitled MURDER. The work reads like a detective, inspired by the labyrinthine spaces of the Hotel. The work was conceived during a previous stay in HOTEL MARIAKAPEL. (Until 18 Dec 05 also on show in Tramway, Glasgow, as part of the exhibition Western...er? with the art and design collective Lapland.)
During the opening: every 30 minutes a guided tour through the Hotel, visiting the installations MURDER and PrintROOM (a collection of artist's book by the Rotterdam based artist initiative ROOM/Karin de Jong.)
Supported by the City of Hoorn, Province of Noord-Holland and the Mondriaan Foundation
